PI­ETER­MAR­ITZBURG OR DURBAN. ALSO SINCE THEN, THE WIN­NER HANDS OVER A GREET­ING FROM ONE MAYOR TO THE OTHER, WHICH HE RE­CEIVES AS HE EN­TERS THE STA­DIUM AT THE FIN­ISH.

THE RECORD FOR THE ‘DOWN’ RUN IS HELD BY DAVID GATEBE, WHO CLOCKED 5:18.19 IN 2016. LEONID SHVETSOV HELD THE PRE­VI­OUS RECORD OF 5:20.41, ES­TAB­LISHED IN 2007. FRITH VAN DER MERWE STILL HOLDS THE WOMEN’S RECORD OF 5:54.43, WHICH SHE RAN IN 1989.
