Also for the little ones is Shrek the Musical Jr at the Peoples Theatre, with Shrek, Fiona and Donkey as a dynamic trio, backed up by a large cast of children as the fairy-tale characters. At the National Children’s Theatre the show is The Adventures of Oliver Twist with songs like Food, Glorious Food, Consider Yourself and You’ve Got to Pick a Pocket or Two.

Next weekend, the 60-strong Johannesbu­rg Youth Orchestra is sharing the stage of the Joburg Theatre with the Princess of Africa, Yvonne Chaka Chaka, at A Night of the Stars on Saturday night and Sunday afternoon. Backed by the talented youngsters, she will be performing Motherland, Umqombothi, Natural Woman, Let the Children Live and others.

Also up are X-Factor winners FOUR, singers Monde Msutwana and Annemarie Steenkamp and the Mzansi Youth Choir.

This weekend you can still catch the Geneva Ballet at the Joburg Theatre. This Swiss company will be performing Roméo & Juliette, re-imagined from the Shakespear­ean tragedy.

On Wednesday, Loyiso Gola will be on the Mandela stage at the Joburg Theatre for a one-off performanc­e of Loyiso Gola – Live, delivered in the format of our recent State of Nation address, where Gola covers current affairs for the past six months. There’s no shortage of material.

Alan Committie stars as the hapless Seymour in Little Shop of Horrors at Pieter Toerien’s Montecasin­o Theatre.

This cult rock musical has a number of showstoppe­r hits, including Suddenly Seymour, Skid Row (Downtown) and, of course, the title number.

Miss Dietrich Regrets, exploring the legend of movie star Marlene Dietrich, is at the Auto & General Theatre on the Square and Antoinette Kellermann wears the pants in As Die Broek Pas at the Market Theatre.

John Kani’s Missing can be seen at the State Theatre in Pretoria all this week. Also at the complex is the second season of the 2015 Drama for Life Season with the dance pieces Synapse and Broken Chant and the poetry and movement piece The Funeral.

Next weekend, from June 26 to 28, the Dlala Mapantsula Annual Festival will be held at the Soweto Theatre highlighti­ng the isiPantsul­a and isiBhujwa dance discipline­s.

On the student front, the TUT musical theatre students are staging Expectatio­ns at the Breytenbac­h Theatre in Pretoria this week. The score includes hits by Leonard Bernstein, Bob Fossy
