The most expensive hotel suites in the world
The world’s most extravagant hotels are more than luxury and location. They have celebrity status, history and heritage. Landmarks in their own right, a stay at one of these establishments is an experience!
1. MONACO
For $48 000 (R705 542) you can purchase a car or a home. You could also blow it on just one night on the French Riviera in absolute style. The opulent two-bedroom Princess Grace suite is the centrepiece of the multimillion dollar Hotel de Paris Monte-carlo in the swanky Mediterranean principality of Monaco. The 910m² luxury suite takes its name, and its style pointers, from celebrated US movie star Grace Kelly, who became a princess when she wed Monaco’s Prince Rainier in 1956.
2. MOROCCO
At about $43 380 (R637 964) a night the Grand Riad at Royal Mansour in Marrakech, Morocco, is a five-star supernova. It is one of the most extraordinary hotels in the world. According to an independent review, the food is astonishing and the service happens as if by telepathy. And the 53 individual riads that serve as guest quarters are exquisite. No wonder the Beckhams love it.
3. NEW YORK
The Royal Suite at The Plaza in New York costs about $40 000 (R588 050) a night. And there’s a reason this is called the Royal Suite – it draws inspiration from the court of Louis XV. The suite’s three bathrooms are covered in mosaic marble tile, and there are 24-karat gold-plated fixtures throughout the other rooms.
4. SWITZERLAND
At about R1 million a night the near 2 000m² Royal Penthouse Suite at the Hotel President Wilson in Geneva, Switzerland, is famous for being the largest and most luxurious in Europe. Located on the entire eighth and top floor of the hotel with a panoramic terrace and a breathtaking view over Lake Geneva the suite has 12 luxury bedrooms including marble bathrooms, and bath products by Hermès.
5. INDIA
The Raj Palace Hotel in Jaipur, India, is more than two and a half centuries old. The Shahi Mahal Suite will cost you about $60 000 (R882 057) a night. The suite boasts six bedrooms, a private theatre, a library, and a private kitchen staff. The pink city is also known for its historical landmarks including the Hawa Mahal, Jantar Mantar and City Palace.
