mabaso enjoys having to juggle two roles

ACTOR Mduduzi Mabaso, well known for the role he plays on Rhythm City as Suffocate, has taken up a new role on e.tv’s daily drama, Imbewu: The Seed.

The actor will remain on Rhythm City but will travel to Durban for the shooting of Imbewu.

Mabaso made his first appearance on the local show recently, where he was introduced as Majozi, a man who drives a yellow car.

He’s a self-made millionaire who went to school with Zimele “Ngcolosi” Mkhize, and has entered the show to stir up trouble between Mazulu and Ngcolosi.

“Majozi grew up in the kasi but moved to Johannesburg for a better life. He didn’t finish school but pushed himself to learn. Now he is a well-established businessman who came to Durban for a business meeting with a friend. Since Mazulu is his friend who he hasn’t seen in years, he decides to pay her a visit to see if she is OK. Then the story moves forward from here,” says Mabaso.

He says working between shows is challenging, but he enjoys it because it kept him on his toes.

“It’s a new experience. It’s very different, but at the same time, it’s fun. What I enjoyed most about the role is the language. The Zulu in Durban is so real and authentic. The script is also straightforward – they don’t beat around the bush,” added Mabaso.

The actor says that although he had heard of Imbewu: the Seed, he had not watched an episode and had to quickly catch up on the storyline after getting the role.

“It’s strange to say, but as actors, we hardly watch TV. When I got the role, I had to quickly watch a few episodes to catch up on the story. It was a good story, it was well shot, and it was fresh and new. I could see the actors were hungry and serious about the script – which was exciting,” says Mabaso.

Mabaso had not acted with any of the show’s cast, but says he enjoyed working with them.

“I’ve seen them around, but never acted with them. They are a great cast, and I’m learning a lot from them. There are a lot of new actors that have new ways of doing things. It’s always interesting to see. As actors, we also need to evolve with the time,” he said.

The show also introduced industry giant, Tony Kgoroge, who took over the role of Zimele “Ngcolosi” Bhengu.

The character was previously played by Mpumelelo Bhulose, who was fired in July for absenteeism and late-coming.

Ngcolosi is Mazulu’s (Leleti Khumalo) husband and one of the three shareholders of Maluju Oil, a company he views as rightfully “his”.

The show promises an edgy and intriguing plot that is bound to leave viewers gasping for more.

Imbewu: The Seed airs on weekdays at 9:30pm on e.tv.
