A market with a difference

- THOBILE MAZIBUKO

THE YEAR’S festivities have started and market lovers can look forward to the

Locrate Market’s fifth birthday celebration at Lebo’s Soweto Backpackers in Orlando West on February 3.

Unlike any other market, Locrate is not just a hangout spot, it’s a platform where likeminded people meet, greet, eat and interact.

“Our objective is not only to create a vibe but also to create a space where people can start new set-ups outside the traditional businesses we grew up knowing,” says Sifiso Dlangamandla, Locrate’s brand manager.

Locrate is a food, design and experience market.

You’ll find food trucks and vendors who serve gourmet meals that you might not find on the streets of Soweto.

With design, art and fashion exhibitions are where it’s at.

“We have live performances, poetry sessions, live bands, wine gardens – and childminders who look after your kids while you have fun,” says Kgosi Rampa, the founder of Locrate Market.

With soul, lounge and jazz being the most-played genres at Locrate, you can look forward to live performances by the likes of Kid Funk, Skin Deep and great mixes by their resident DJ, Boy Sanza. Locrate takes place on the first Sunday of every month. This year they’ve come up with three concepts: Locrate Stories is a platform for people to interact and gather ideas. Kulture Korner is for creatives under the age of 24 to showcase their craft for free.

The Locrate Visits initiative visits local stores, hosts an event and the profit made goes to the owner.
