Video song ‘blunder’ shocks fans

- STAFF REPORTER

BABES Wodumo stunned social media again on Friday when a short video of her singing along to the lyrics referencing her abuse surfaced.

She opened a case of assault and had her long-time partner Mandla “Mampintsha” Maphumulo arrested when a video showed him assaulting her at their Westville home last month. Maphumulo was released on R2 000 bail after he appeared at the Pinetown Magistrate’s Court. On the day of his release, he told journalists he had assaulted her, but blamed her.

Maphumulo has recorded a song with DJ Tira. Part of the lyrics are taken from the abuse video of him assaulting Wodumo. In the abuse video, he scolded Wodumo and told her to hush as she attempted to scream after he assaulted her.

He quipped: “Kukhona iy’ngane la endlini” (behave, there are children in the house), lyrics which are now contained in the song which is yet to be released officially.

Wodumo is the latest to feel the wrath of Twitter after social media users were left angry, dejected and surprised at the musician singing along to a reference about her own abuse.

This is how some on Twitter reacted to Wodumo’s latest perceived blunder.

“Babes Wodumo and Mampintsha used abuse to market their song… PR is at its lowest in SA,” tweeted @ Nochill4d.

“How many of us are disappointed in Babes Wodumo after seeing her performing Mampintsha new track. How many of us will stay focused, drink water mind our own business next time,” the @Advbarryroux parody account wrote on Twitter.

“Does Babes Wodumo take what was done to her seriously?

“Does she respect those who went all out to stand by her and cancel Mampintsha? Does she understand that gender based violence and femicide are a real thing?” @Phiwank asked in a tweet.

Another user tweeted a picture of a clown and captioned it: “Babes Wodumo fans right now”.

“Shem Babes Wodumo is toying with your emotions. She knew performing that song will get negative attention. You sitting there calling for #Mutemampintsha when his victim is performing his music. Who is the fool here? BTW (by the way), she is under no contractual obligation to perform it,” wrote Phil Mphela, an entertainment commentator.

He said: “At what point do you hold an adult responsible for their actions and choices? Choices have consequences. People don’t get exempt from responsibility just because they are famous. Babes Wodumo is not a child. She is a grown woman”.

“Babes Wodumo basically told SA, ‘you take your business and you mind it. You mind it, you mind it, you mind it,” tweeted @OHLEE_XV.

“I don’t know what to make of Babes Wodumo anymore!! She’s truly sick in the head. I’m pretty sure, does she understand that one day she’ll wake up and that man will kill her and the public won’t care?” asked @ lesegotriumph.
