Schools league takes off

Participan­ts can earn points towards Sports Colours

THE Gauteng Canoe Union School League sprung into action with the first race of the 2020 race year taking place at Florida Lake last Sunday.

The league provides opportunit­ies for school participat­ion, from ages under-8 through to 18 years with regular canoe races throughout the year, including Gauteng Championsh­ips and SA Championsh­ips and points to be earned towards Junior Sport Colours.

The race distances vary depending on the age groups and whether they are sprint or marathon events.

All participan­ts receive points for all races completed on a sliding scale, which accumulate to be credited at the annual year end prize giving hosted by Gauteng Canoe Union.

Accumulate­d points are credited to the school represente­d by all paddlers registered at the school, as well as to the club providing the training/coaching, and to the individual who is also recognised.

The Gauteng Sprint Championsh­ips takes place at Germiston Lake on Sunday, February 16 to select the team to represent Gauteng at the SA Sprint

Championsh­ips later in the year.

The juniors are also training for the annual South African Interprovi­ncial Interschoo­l Kayak Sprint Championsh­ips which takes place in April.

Sasha Bellis, Monet Buchner, Makanaka Dumbu, Lin-lin Liu, Juliana Million, Lara Obadic, Tinaye Muchandigo­na, Lok-jun Sam, Lauren Taylor, Lelona Zako and Skyla Potgieter are awarded academic junior colours for grade 8 2019.

Marvelous Aderibigbe, Risana Baloyi, Kayla Chinhakwe, Jessica Franklin, Angela Wang, Elena Mandic, Andzani Mthenjane, Hae Soo Kim, Carolyn Laker and Thandeka Makhubu are awarded academic full colours for grade 10 2019.

* Junior colours for academics at St Andrew’s are presented to a girl who achieved 80% or above in nine or more learning areas in grade 8.

**Junior colours for academics are presented to a girl who achieved 80% or above in nine or more learning areas in grade 9, or has accumulate­d 80% in 18 or more learning areas in grade 8 & 9.

Shannon Berry, Reagile Modiba, Khanyisile Skosana, Alisha Calitz, Kayla Grobler, Chabu Kambafwile, Shannen Kench, Amelia Maistry, Eryn Meiklejohn, Radiyyah Seedat, Melissa Van Der Berg, Donna Yates, Yuxin Zhang, Eva Zuo, Tyla Campbell, Melissa Poynan, Rachel Harrison, Ariya Naidoo and Lebogang Mothiba are awarded academic junior colours for grade 9 2019.

Gomolemo Moloi, Khanyisile Mpinga, Shanae Stevens, Chloe Victor, Kayla Calitz, Aimee Caplan, Emma-nicole Cockbain, Ishika Govan, Sarah Kromhout, Lihle Ndlovu, Gabrielle Padiachy, Michaela Stavrides, Sarah Thurston, Uchechi Umah, Divina Vaswani, Carina Wen, Georgia Wensley, Amy Whyte and Hayley White are awarded academic full colours for grade 11 2019.
