Katlego off air after cheating, abuse video

- STAFF REPORTER

SOCIAL media was abuzz yesterday over allegations of a juicy sex scandal involving prominent local media personality Katlego Maboe.

The scandal gave rise to #Katlego and #Nikita, in relation to Nikita Murray, the woman he admitted to having an affair with in a video apparently recorded by his former girlfriend and mother of his child, Monique Muller, trending on Twitter for most of the day.

His infamous catch phrase “chencha dai deng” on his Outsurance television commercial, as well as #Outsuranceguy and #Expresso, on which Maboe is a presenter were also among the top Twitter trends on the day as South Africans weighed in on the controversial topic.

In the video, which has gone viral, there is a confrontation between Maboe and Muller with the Safta-winning presenter confessing his infidelity to his partner who threatens to keep their son away from him if he doesn’t tell her the truth.

In the video, which surfaced on social media on Thursday night, Muller said Maboe gave her a sexually transmitted infection that damaged her womb and put the chances of her having another child under threat.

Maboe has since taken to Instagram to admit that he did cheat on his partner but insists that he never abused her.

He reiterated this to IOL Entertainment and added that this is now a legal matter.

“I’m respecting the legal process and everyone involved and not compromising anyone or bringing anyone into disrepute,” Maboe told the website.

He added that the video was filmed in August and what started off as a normal evening at home escalated quickly.

“My child was used as a weapon, and as a father, I was placed in a position where I need to consider my love for him … I said what I said on the video and I tried my best to at least draw the line of the integrity of the people involved.

“I was very willing to have the conversation with her in person but very soon realised the intention of the video from the beginning was for it to be released,” Maboe said.

Following the public dispute, Outsurance has revealed that all commercials featuring the media personality will be removed “as soon as practically possible” following the allegations of infidelity and abuse against Maboe.

Meanwhile, The Expresso Morning Show production company, Cardova Productions, said they were aware of the allegations and the video and in the interim Maboe will not be appearing on the popular local show.

They added they condemned violence against women and children, took the allegations seriously, and the matter was being “fully investigated”.

Meanwhile, those on Twitter weighed in on the matter with a wide range of opposing views.

@Mxbeez tweeted: “Katlego giving his partner an STD is one of the reasons why you should never forgive cheating,” while @bongani_sono added that “If this woman loved Katlego or her own son, she would have handled their situation privately or told Katlego’s elders … That kid still needs to go to school”.

Others used the opportunity to poke fun at his Outsurance ads.

@wiseprince posted: “Don’t be like Katlego. SMS OUT, if you no longer want your partner”.
