MEDICAL AID
The Board of Healthcare Funders (BHF) is taking legal action against the Council for Medical Schemes (CMS) for stalling in implementing cheap medical aid options for low-income workers, according to a Juta Medical Brief report. In papers filed in the Gauteng High Court this week, the
BHF said the CMS is preventing millions of people from accessing affordable cover - it is more than seven years since it began developing a legal framework to enable medical schemes to offer low-cost options. In a separate affidavit, Insight Actuaries & Consultants joint-ceo Christoff Raath said the most plausible explanation was that the CMS was intentionally delaying the rollout of these options to facilitate the implementation of National Health Insurance.
