Baby SUV

AFTER releasing the first few pictures of the new Jeep Avenger last month, the Stellantis-owned North American brand fully revealed its new baby SUV at the Paris Motor Show.

Described as being “right-sized” for Europe, the Jeep Avenger won’t be sold in the brand’s US home market and it remains to be seen if South Africans will get to experience the new Jeeplet.

For now, the company has only released details about the fully-electric version of its new SUV, but a conventional turbocharged petrol engine will also be offered.

Penalties

FORMULA One teams who spend more than allowed by the rules are effectively cheating and should face stiff sporting and financial penalties, Mclaren boss Zak Brown has told the governing FIA.

The BBC reported details of the leaked letter this week and Mclaren confirmed they were correct.

Championship leader Red Bull, which won the drivers’ title last year with Max Verstappen, breached the $145 million (R2.61 billion) cap in 2021.

The FIA said on October 10 that it was a “minor overspend”, or less than 5% of the overall cap, but gave no details of how much was involved. | IOL Motoring

Roomy

MERCEDES has whipped the covers off yet another battery-powered crossover and the new EQE SUV looks exactly the way you’d expect, given the common design theme we’ve seen with the latest EQ range.

As the fourth model to use the company’s all-electric architecture, the new midsize SUV is closely related to the EQE sedan and despite being a little bit smaller than the latter, it promises to be one of the roomiest vehicles in its class.

Five powertrain variants are on offer to cater for most needs, including two impressively powerful AMG variants. At the top of the pile is the Mercedes-amg EQE 53 4Matic. | IOL Motoring

Future

WITH more than eight million units sold between 1961 and 1994, the Renault 4 is one of the most successful French cars of all time. And now its modern successor has taken shape – in the form of the 4Ever Trophy design study.

Although it is technically a concept, Renault says the vehicle paves the way for a future B-segment SUV, which will be exclusively battery-powered. The lower section of the vehicle, with its large protective plates and reinforced underbody, was designed for off-road trails, although the production version will, no doubt, be toned down to resemble a normal SUV. | IOL Motoring
