FORMER US president Donald Trump lost a bid this week to delay the appointment of a watchdog at his real estate company, New York state court records showed.
The Appellate Division, a mid-level state appeals court, rejected Trump’s request for a stay of Justice Arthur Engoron’s November 3 order requiring an independent monitor for the Trump Organization.
New York Attorney General Letitia James had filed a $250 million (about
R4.5 billion) civil lawsuit in September against Trump; his adult children Donald jr, Eric and Ivanka; the New York-based Trump Organization and others, for allegedly overvaluing assets and Trump’s net worth through a decade of lies to banks and insurers.
Last month, she asked for a monitor to be installed before the case goes to trial to halt fraud at the company. That came after Trump’s company created a new entity – “Trump Organization II LLC” – that she viewed as a possible attempt to offload assets out of her reach. | Reuters

REPUBLICAN gains in Congress will bring headaches to President Joe Biden as he shepherds aid to Ukraine and on climate, but with midterm election results being unexpectedly close, Biden will still be firmly in command on the world stage.
The Democratic party performed better than expected and is potentially in a position to retain control of the Senate.
Biden appealed for political unity this week as his party looked set to narrowly lose control of the House of Representatives, calling for an end to “endless political warfare”.

Lawsuit
A WOMAN who claims actor Warren
Beatty coerced her into sex with him almost 50 years ago when she was a teenager has filed a lawsuit against him in Los Angeles this week.
The suit is the latest effort to claim compensation under a California law that allows complaints that would otherwise have passed the statute of limitations.
Kristina Charlotte Hirsch alleges in the suit that she met the Bonnie and Clyde actor on a movie set when she was 14 or 15 years old.

FUEL distribution has resumed in Haiti after police flushed out gang gunmen who had held the country’s main oil import terminal for two months.
The gang’s stranglehold on the Varreux terminal had paralysed the country, causing severe fuel shortages and halting deliveries of drinking water – key to fighting a cholera outbreak.
At least 45 trucks have been loaded with fuel, officials said on Twitter this week. The first fuel to leave the terminal headed to factories, hospitals and other public institutions. | AFP
