Stop press: News Café is back

- LEBOHANG MOSIA

HAVING been temporarily closed due to renovations, News Café in Woodmead has opened its doors again. I’m no stranger to this establishment’s vibe, where you’ll find cleverly crafted cocktails and an atmosphere to match. It is a high street café and cocktail bar offering a relaxed yet equally entertaining dining experience.

Over the past two decades, News Café has grown from a single store in Hatfield, established in 1995, to a household brand. News Café is renowned for their comprehensive cocktail menu ranging from classic cocktails to their own creations, as well as a selection of wines, beer on tap and premium spirits. They also offer a wide variety of premium coffees, unique smoothies and non-alcoholic beverages.

News Café has lived up to its promise to deliver innovative ways to enjoy and appreciate the beautiful sunsets with their cocktail menu. Encompassing a variety of options – from the traditional margarita, boosted with a cool Mexican twist as Solgarita is introduced, all the way to the classic martini which has been updated, and a pangalactic gargle blaster – there is always a new favourite.

The café-style menu includes a variety of breakfasts, salads, wraps, burgers and house favourites as well as a selection of finger foods and platters.

“Our menu is unique and offers a variety of light snacks and wholesome meals that are a fusion of culinary traditions and tastes from around the world, freshly prepared and crafted from quality products,” says franchisee, Basil Papageorgiou.

I had the Cajun chicken wholewheat wrap with feta, onion, baby leaf lettuce, tomato and tangy Cajun mayo. It was proteinrich and deliciously filling.

They have a Mexican subsection in their menu and I opted for spicy chicken quesadillas with fajita spiced chicken, sautéed mixed peppers and onion, toasted in a tortilla with cheddar and mozzarella cheese, served with guacamole, sour cream and their house salsa.

Because I did not want to leave any corner of the menu untouched, I had BBQ ribs served with chips. If your appetite is as big as mine, the 600g rack should suffice. I have a love affair with ribs that only News Cafe’s smashed burgers could come between. The Woodmead branch is situated in an ideal location, but the real secret to News Cafe’s success is their ability to deliver an energy that keeps us coming back for more.
