MAC IS BACK, SANS CRUISE

Water shortage meant river was too low for voyage

-

MRS MAC and I are safely home after a holiday that turned out to be something entirely different to what we had planned.

Cape Town is not the only place in the world with water problems, and one has to wonder what is going on with the climate right across the planet.

After five days of a planned 15-day voyage on the Danube and Rhine rivers, we were informed that due to low water levels and lack of rain earlier in the year, our longdreamed-of cruise was being converted into a coach tour.

So we abandoned ship, travelled across Germany and Holland by train, and set up camp for 10 days in Amsterdam.

I am not one for packing and unpacking every night.

Once back under our own control, we had a great time using the fabulous Dutch transport system and did daily tours to six different towns and really caught up on European history with visits to many significant old buildings.

The highlight for me was an underground tour in Utrecht, where I could study Roman building systems dating back to 400AD (See picture right).
