SACP pre­pares for Joe Slovo me­mo­rial

THE SACP will host the an­nual com­mem­o­ra­tion of the death of its for­mer leader Joe Slovo to­mor­row.

Slovo, a politi­cian and co-founder of the ANC’S mil­i­tary wing umkhonto we Sizwe, died 24 years ago. His com­mem­o­ra­tion is held ev­ery year at Avalon Ceme­tery where he was buried. SACP gen­er­alsec­re­tary Blade Nz­i­mande will de­liver a key­note ad­dress which will out­line work­ing class pri­or­i­ties for this year.

Rep­re­sen­ta­tives of the Al­liance and the Young Com­mu­nist League will also de­liver mes­sages.

At the time of his death, Slovo was the na­tional chair­per­son of the SACP. He was a mem­ber of the na­tional ex­ec­u­tive com­mit­tee and na­tional work­ing com­mit­tee of the ANC, and the first Min­is­ter of Hous­ing af­ter the 1994 elec­tions.

Slovo was also the gen­er­alsec­re­tary of the SACP and was suc­ceeded by Chris Hani. |
