After such a lengthy lockdown, people are hungry for a slice of normality. The owners, hairstylists and barbers of Groomed Men & Ladies are offering a discount with a difference. The salon is offering patrons the opportunity to “pay what you can, and enjoy up to a 50% discount on services and receive the same standard of treatment for which the brand is so well-known.

The economic effects of lockdown are starting to pinch the majority of South Africans. A higher rate of unemployment and lower earnings for those who are employed has seen a marked decrease in general spending, and with that, more and more businesses are being forced to shut their doors. Some local companies are doing their utmost to make the best of a bad situation. One such a business is Groomed Men & Ladies, based in the Western Cape.

Lockdown was tough for business owners. Forced to pause all operations in April, most have come through the worst and are actively looking for ways to entice customers back to their storefronts. Eric Way Lovemore, owner of Groomed Men & Ladies Salon in Somerset West, Stellenbosch and Riebeek Kasteel explained that when the salon reopened, they realised just how many of their patrons had been affected by salary cuts. In light of this, they have introduced a

“pay what you can” initiative. In an attempt to drive patrons back to their stylish locations, the salon will discount your treatment by up to 50%, if you’ve been affected by salary cuts.

In a move that will set them apart from their competitors, the salon is also offering vouchers for those patrons who opt to pay full price. As an example, those who elect to pay the total amount of R290 for a gent’s haircut will receive a R145 voucher for their next haircut. Patrons can also choose to give their voucher to a friend or family member. The idea applies to all in-store treatments: pay full price and get a 50% off voucher for your next visit. This money will help supplement treatments of individuals that have had their income drastically reduced by the pandemic. “We want people to know that even though they might still be affected financially, we are prepared to also compromise on our earnings so that our loyal and faithful clients can still enjoy being groomed to perfection by us,” explains Eric Way.

The national lockdown was unprecedented, and we are still only starting to understand the effects it has had on the public’s mental health. Experts agree that if you look good, you feel good which carves a unique niche for salons like Groomed
