The last few months have been harsh. We’ve all had to say goodbye to brands that we love, but at last, there was light at the end of the tunnel. Level Two was a lifesaver for hundreds of thousands of businesses across the country, and while we aren’t entirely out of the dark yet, there is reason to hope.

One of the industries most affected by the pandemic was tourism. Our national borders remain closed, for the time being at least, and businesses that cater mostly to international tourists find themselves perilously close to the red line. I could go further into this discussion, but it doesn’t make for the lightest reading.

Millions of international tourists visit us every year. Clearly, we have something they want, and now the borders are closed, South Africans have the opportunity to turn tourists in their own country without having to compete for bookings.

In this edition, we explore Margate in KwaZulu-Natal and report on all of the happenings in this quaint coastal town. From farmers markets to nature walks, Margate is a great choice for a sneaky week away. CemAir flies direct to Margate from OR Tambo, making the journey that much easier.

Everyone has heard of the Oyster Box Hotel but did you know that the hotel is built on the original plot of the lighthouse keeper’s house? Experiencing the Red Carnation Hotels style of hospitality is a must for any lover of luxury, and their beloved Umhlanga property is a great start. Relax in the warm Durban sunshine on a signature red and white lounger and sample one (or many) of their cocktails, served poolside.

For those who fancy a Western Cape break, Opstal Estate is nestled in the Breede River Valley and offers visitors a slice of delicious serenity. Who wouldn’t want a break from the hustle and bustle of the city after four months in lockdown? This seventh-generation family-owned enterprise is also a working wine farm, producing a selection of delectable wines. With five accommodation options, Opstal has something for every travelling party and the bonus of panoramic views of the valley.

In keeping with our local theme, we got to know the names and faces behind ROWDY Bags, a leather company that works out of Woodstock, Cape Town. Each piece is made with love and comes with a note explaining who made the item, a bit more about them and thanking you for supporting a local business. Investing in high-quality pieces means your items will last longer and get better with age, just like a fine Opstal wine.
