Time to Go Camping on the South Coast

Five Reasons to Go Camping on the South Coast

-

With the chill now in the air, it’s time to shake off winter blues and #GoSouthKZN, where visitors can enjoy the coastal paradise with its clear skies and sunny weather - no matter the season.

But to experience the #ParadiseoftheZuluKingdom in a truly unique way, it’s well worth booking a camping trip at the seaside.

“The KZN South Coast has several wonderful accommodation types, but our campsites remain some of our most popular, family-friendly venues,” explained Ugu South Coast Tourism (USCT) CEO, Phelisa Mangcu. “Many are located adjacent to the seaside, or with easy beach access, and they’re a wellmaintained, affordable option for bringing families closer to each other, and closer to nature. A number of our campsites are also award-winning, showcasing the elevated level of service provided our visitors.”

For those who haven’t yet braved the outdoors, here are five reasons to #GoSouthKZN for a camping trip:

1. IT’S BUDGET-FRIENDLY

Many are looking to make the rands and cents go further with the struggling economy, which is where camping is a great option. Camping equipment can be borrowed or rented, and the cost of hiring a camping spot is substantially less than booking into any other venue. With the South Coast also encouraging visitors to #ExtendYourStay, many venues offer great discounts and special offers.

2. CONNECT WITH NATURE

Campfires under the stars, days spent exploring the rock pools and learning to surf…there’s something invigorating about time spent entirely outdoors. Modern life means very few children get the chance to experience nature in such close proximity, so they’ll truly relish this unique experience. In winter, the South Coast also allows visitors to witness the #SardineRun and whale migrations, truly unique sightings of ocean activity. And, with five Blue Flag beaches, two internationally renowned dive sites, and the most tidal pools in the province, there is a lot to be explored on the coast!

3. BREAK FROM TECHNOLOGY

While modern campsites provide the option of charging electronics where needed, this is a great opportunity to disconnect from the devices and re-wire the mind through natural experiences. This gives families a chance to get to know each other and create new memories.

4. MAKE LASTING CONNECTIONS

Although campsites provide space for privacy, there’s a strong sense of community throughout the site, with youngsters meeting new people from all over, and making connections that can last a lifetime. After so much time spent in isolation, now is the time to re-connect with others and form new friendships.

5. A SENSE OF APPRECIATION

Spending time in the great outdoors, living a minimalist life, gives perspective on how little one needs and encourages appreciation for the little things. Sleeping in a tent, watching the sunrise over the ocean, and roasting marshmallows over an open fire are great ways to improve well-being and create a sense of calm and relaxation.

ACTIVITIES TO TRY ON THE SOUTH COAST

Besides beachside adventures, the #ParadiseoftheZuluKingdom boasts several unique activities that are both family- and budget-friendly. The ‘Golf Coast’ has 11 golf courses alongside oceans and coastal forests; there is a green for every golfer. Numerous nature reserves and farmlands are fabulous for trail hiking, running, 4x4 adventures and day visits. For a cultural experience, there’s the KwaXolo Caves Adventures, a scenic hike to caves holding ancient San artwork, or the Ntelezi Msani Heritage Centre, a facility showcasing the local history, cultural and creative activities of this region. Otherwise, visitors can get

extreme with wild gorge swinging, ziplining, white water rafting and paintball.

COVID-19 SAFETY PROTOCOLS

Because of the many outdoor activities offered on the South Coast, visitors benefit from reduced Covid-19 risk at these openair venues and sites. In addition to this, USCT has been communicating up-todate Covid-19 information with all tourism establishments via the website’s dedicated Covid-19 portal, as well as the many social media platforms.

USCT has made visiting the South Coast simple by launching the free ‘Explore KZN South Coast’ app from Google Play and Apple stores. Once downloaded, visitors can easily plan the entire Easter holiday, from booking accommodation and finding local eateries to discovering specials and planning day trips.
