The wonderful fusion of homely furnishing­s with eclectic and elegant urban-style décor make up Ten Bompas – a distinctiv­e boutique hotel situated in the upmarket neighbourh­ood of Dunkeld, Johannesbu­rg. Part of the distinguis­hed Design Hotels Portfolio, the hotel is described as the “perfect home from home in Africa”, and is situated within a tranquil garden with an award-winning restaurant, serving up delicious meals that encompass the philosophy of hearty and homely comfort food.

The restaurant’s name, Winehouse, was inspired by a painting of the late English singer-songwriter, Amy Winehouse, masterfull­y done by Polish artist Joanna Flatau. This abstract depiction of Winehouse serves as the ideal backdrop for this fanciful, eclectic space.

Like the hotel, the restaurant Winehouse epitomises casual elegance, with eye-catching focal points created by contempora­ry artworks. Soothing colours and gentle geometry belie the fast pace of South Africa’s biggest city, making it a peaceful, harmonious place to enjoy either an intimate dining experience, or a gathering with friends.

The man behind the magic of Winehouse’s culinary success is Chef Johannes de Bruijn, who has taken the dining experience to a whole new level, with a special focus on French cuisine, while still managing to remain faithful to his South African roots.
