World’s Biggest Food Fight
La Tomatina is a food fight festival held on the last Wednesday of August each year in the town of Buñol near Valencia in Spain. Though the tomato fight has been a strong tradition in Buñol since 1944, no one is completely certain how this event originated. One popular theory (among many) is that disgruntled townspeople attacked city councilmen with tomatoes during a town celebration. Whatever happened to begin the tradition, it was enjoyed so much that it has been repeated every year since. The festival, which takes place this year on 28 August 2018, will see thousands of people from across the globe gathering to take part in the one-hour food fight where more than 100 metric tons of over-ripe tomatoes are thrown in the streets.
