Design With a Splash of Beetroot
The changing of the seasons is an amazing thing – long, cool days melt away and turn into sunny African heat waves. In Autumn, the leaves start to fall and the air grows colder before the true frost of winter sets in. The weather has a big impact on what colour variations occupy the seasonal trends, from fashion and beauty to paint and décor.
At Beetroot Inc. they do their upmost to ensure that their seasonal ranges work well within the trending colour spectrum, but they also consistently manage to bring in more surprising collaborations. They push the envelope, while simultaneously staying within the boundaries of the trend.
When decorating any space, it’s wise to use a mixture of trendy colours and some neutrals to make sure your design doesn’t age so quickly.
On Fabrics, Colours and Textures
Choose fabrics that are suitable for outdoors. If furniture gets full exposure to the sun, make use exterior fabrics are lightfast. There is more freedom to use fabrics of different fibres when the outdoor furniture is not exposed to direct sun.
Make use of bold colours when using textiles and play with different textures – it creates a focus point and brings colour to any room.
The World Embraces a SA Tradition for 2018
In terms of international outdoor trends for 2018, the fire-pit is huge. And it seems the rest of the world has caught on to something we South Africans, with our indoor-outdoor lifestyle, take almost for granted: the “outdoor” room.
We asked Beetroot Inc.’s Creative Director, Jeanne Badenhorst, for her advice on how to create an enticing outdoor room.
“Outdoor furniture is no longer just functional furniture. The focus is placed on comfort and design as it becomes an extension of your home’s interior,” Jeanne says. “Add pieces like side tables and coffee tables to your patio set to create an outdoor room with comfort and style. Make use of jumbo floor cushions and carpets to add more dimension and to soften the hard floor. Ottomans the same height as the outdoor couch are great additions to the patio, as they can double up as extra seating or as a coffee table.”
Jeanne recommends finding a dining table that family and friends can gather around to share a meal. “Use both chairs and benches around the table – it creates interest and you can fit more friends in by using a bench. Make use of cushions on the seats to ensure that guests linger for longer.”
Scatter cushions will soften hard surfaces like wood and metal while adding luxury and colour. These items also make it easy and affordable to change your décor with the seasons, Jeanne says.
“Create a space where you want to enjoy the last warm evenings of summer and the bright, cooler autumn or winter days. Layer with textiles in the form of throws or quilts that you can snuggle up with when the evenings get chilly.”
Another way to make sure your design stays fresh is to pay attention to Pantone’s Autumn/winter 2018 report. According to the world-renowned authority on colour, “the continued transition away from cyclical trends, combined with a strong focus on self-expression and more exuberant colour mixes makes for some surprisingly delightful colour surprises in the Autumn/winter palette. Exploring nuances within colour families and experimenting with the mixing of materials and textures freshens and reinvents the seasonal colour story.”
“What I love about this palette,” Elize van den Berg of Beetroot Inc. says, “is that it perfectly reflects the colours we see in our Autumn/winter range of soft furnishings – you don’t have to go to vast expense. Choose a new tablecloth for your outdoor table, scatter some new cushions around in one or a few of these colours, and you have an interesting new look that’s perfectly on trend.”
