A Meander Through the Orchards

-

Ever wondered why you don’t find Orange Pippin or Northern Spy apples in your supermarket any longer? The truth is that tastes change and what we all loved 50 years ago may be too sour or too easily blemished for our exacting demands today. The good news is that Trucape Fruit Marketing, the largest exporter of South African apples and pears, opens their Heritage Orchard, of apples no longer in commercial production, at Oak Valley Estate in Elgin in the Western Cape, on 14 March 2020 for two guided walkabouts by fruit experts. These sessions, between 10 am and midday and later between 2 pm and 4 pm are free of charge but, because numbers are limited to fewer than 40, advanced booking via www.quicket.co.za is essential.
