Right centre-back

-

The Incumbent: Wayne Arendse (34 years old in November)

Since the departure of Alje Schut, Arendse has been a mainstay of the side, doing a very solid job and never letting the team down. His solid play in the air and good passing ability have suited Sundowns very well, but he is now reaching the twilight years of his career. He has started six games this season and is trusted completely by the coach.

The Successor: Motjeka Madisha (23 years old) /Rivaldo Coetzee (22 years old)

For the position on the right of the two central defenders, Downs have two excellent younger options ready to come into the side. Both Madisha and Coetzee offer excellent pace, ball-playing ability both in terms of passing and running with the ball and, despite lacking significant height, they are both aggressive in the air and have strong leaps. Coetzee is currently having major issues with injury after a longterm foot layoff, but if he can finally get himself fit again, he could lead the backline for the next decade.

Verdict: The Brazilians look to have excellent, younger options in defence and should not require much investment in this area for the next few years, unless Coetzee’s injury problems prove to be chronic. However, with proper management, he should be able to play one game a week in coming months. Madisha is already a regular Bafana squad member and whilst his allaction, strong-tackling style can lead to the odd mistake, he should soon cement his spot in the starting XI.
