What are the facts?

In February of 2016, Max Tshabalala made public his intentions to sell Bloemfontein Celtic following defeat to Pirates in an Absa Premiership match at the Orlando Stadium – a result marred by violent scenes where both sets of fans clashed. The club boss’ reasons then were that he did not want to be responsible for bloodshed in the name of football, but has since admitted it is a financial burden to run a PSL team. Tshabalala did eventually find a potential buyer in Sinki Leshabane and Dr Moeketsi Mosola, who had reportedly offered to pay R40 million to complete the takeover in September of 2018. But the deal collapsed when an incredible debt of R43 million owed by Tshabalala to the South African Revenue Service emerged, as well as the revelation that there were two companies registered under the name Celtic.

It is clear that the club is under financial strain, with Komphela’s resignation letter placing a spotlight on the club’s current status.

While the questions surrounding the irregular salary payments and strikes from players have been well publicised, the resignation letter submitted by the coach has questioned the club’s day-to-day running by Konco.
