Odds are stacked heavily in Maluleka’s favour: Mosimane wants him, and so does current Chiefs coach Middendorp. He wins either way if he decides to stay at Naturena with a lack of game-time seemingly no longer a concern and he can point to his performances – backed by the coach – when negotiating a big new contract. Should he move to Sundowns, that is also value for money. Players are attracted by the big money and trophies – this is often what Downs have over their rivals because they can offer plenty of it. A win for Chiefs could be getting Pieterse if they feel they have ample cover in midfield, while a victory for Sundowns may be landing a high-profile player like Maluleka and still have Onyango and Kennedy Mweene and possibly even Thela Ngobeni, though the latter is also looking for regular game-time elsewhere. Chiefs can, of course, decide to put an end to all this by offering Maluleka a deal too good to turn down. But that remains to be seen.
