Chiefs to battle Downs for Kenyan striker?

-

Kaizer Chiefs are believed to be unhappy with the contribution from their strikers this season and could now turn their attention to a striker that was previously linked with a move to Mamelodi Sundowns.

The Siya crew has been informed that Jesse Were, who will be a familiar face after he was a handful to Amakhosi defenders as he led the line with distinction for ZESCO United when the two sides met recently in the CAF Confederation Cup group stages playoff, has become a primary target for the Glamour Boys.

As reported by the Siya crew on January 30, Sundowns were keen on adding the Kenyan international to coach Pitso Mosimane’s squad, though a move has failed to materialise to date.

Siya sources have now indicated that Were, a 29-year-old who joined ZESCO three years ago, is seen as ideal competition for Leonardo Castro and would be expected to adapt quickly in the Premier Soccer League given the similarities in the style of play with the Zambian game.

He scored in both the home and away leg of the Confederation Cup fixtures against Chiefs last month. The Siya crew understands Chiefs went into the two-legged tie knowing of Were’s ability - identified as a possible target in the past - and that performance would not have done his reputation any harm.

At the moment, Chiefs rely on Castro, Khama Billiat, Bernard Parker, Ryan Moon, Gustavo Paez and Dumisani Zuma upfront. These players have managed a paltry nine league goals between them all season, and all signs are that Chiefs will be reshuffling their strike force at the end of the season.
