Modise in advanced talks with City

-

Teko Modise is in progressive talks with Cape Town City over potentially staying at the club for one more season, Siya sources have indicated.

And the biggest indicator yet that ‘Dona’ may very well have a future at the club came earlier last week when coach Benni McCarthy told reporters that he doesn’t see how the club would allow the midfielder to leave.

Modise, 36, is two months away from his current contract running down and City have yet to announce an extension, though it is understood both parties are keen to continue the relationship for at least one more year.

Speaking to journalists after their 1-0 defeat to Golden Arrows two weekends ago in a game Modise in which was an unused substitute, McCarthy said, “I can’t see him not staying. Dona has been amazing. Not just what he brings on the field with his experience, but how he’s helped the younger players. He’s been exceptional. The club would be a bit foolish if we don’t renew or keep him.”

The player will turn 37 in December and indications are that a new one-year deal for him could be on the cards. Contacted for comment, Modise’s agent, Jazzman Mahlakgane, confirmed that negotiations are progressing.

“We are talking to Cape Town City regarding Dona. Talks are ongoing between me and John (Comitis), and I should be there (Cape Town) again next week to finalise some issues,” said Mahlakgane.

The player’s representative went on to dismiss the rumours surfacing on social media, suggesting that he will be retiring.

“That’s fake news and it shouldn’t be taken seriously. Dona is in Benni McCarthy’s plans at Cape Town City. He and the coach are on good terms. Take it from me, I’m in discussions with the club’s chairman regarding Teko,” concluded Mahlakgane.

Modise was on the bench for City in their away match to Bloemfontein Celtic, which was abandoned in the first half for security reasons, on Sunday.
