MTAWALI KEEN TO FURTHER COACHING CAREER IN SA

-

Former Malawi senior national team head coach, Ernest Mtawali, is currently in search of a club to coach in South Africa.

Mtawali’s last job was as the head coach of the Flames, having been appointed in August of 2015. The 50-year-old previously also coached his country’s U20 national team, while he also had stints as the coach of Bloemfontein Celtic during their time in the NFD.

“I am in South Africa and currently looking for a coaching job with one of the clubs. During the 2011/12 season. I worked as a scout for Mamelodi Sundowns. I left the club after I got a role as an assistant coach for the Malawi national team. That was during the 2013/14 season. During the 2014/15 season, I was the head coach of the Malawi U20 team, before getting the role as the coach of the Malawi senior national team,” confirmed Mtawali.

During his heyday as a professional footballer, Mtawali made a name for himself in Mzansi’s top-flight with Siwelele (using surname Chirwali) during the 1980s. He then went on to become a star player in the great Sundowns teams of the 1990s.

Regarded as one of the best talents to have ever emerged from Malawi, Mtawali also had spells with clubs in Argentina, France and Saudi Arabia. He then returned to Mzansi to end his illustrious career with Orlando Pirates and Ajax Cape Town, respectively, before turning his attention to coaching.

“I did my UEFA A Licence in Germany in 2013. That was after I had obtained my UEFA B Licence in England in 2008. I did my CAF A Licence in 2015 in Malawi. All these qualifications came after I did my C License Coaching Course in Limpopo in 2004,” added Mtawali.

Mtawali’s coaching career over the years has also taken him to lower league clubs such as PJ Stars and Alexandra United, and the legend has made it clear that he is open to coaching in any division, despite his experience.

“I don’t have a problem with joining any team, and in any league, as all that I am prepared to do is to coach. Being part of the technical team of any club is what I am looking for at the moment,” Mtawali concluded.
