Chiefs, Downs to swoop on SSU striker?

-

He’s got six goals to his name for SuperSport United so far this season, and once again interest is growing in Zimbabwean international, Evans Rusike.

The 28-year-old made his name in the Absa Premiership while playing for Maritzburg United and this season he has played his part in helping Matsatsantsa a Pitori maintain a title challenge up until now despite having not found the back of the net since February.

According to Siya sources, both Kaizer Chiefs and Mamelodi Sundowns have shown an interest in trying to land the forward’s signature ahead of the 2019/20 season, though his long-term contract and previous transfer fee would suggest that it would take big money to lure him away.

Ernst Middendorp is eager to try and ring the changes at Chiefs as they prepare for the next campaign and, with Gustavo Paez seemingly on his way out, it would appear that Rusike has become a top target for the German – especially given the history between coach and player.

Rusike scored 10 goals and got 14 assists in 28 games for Middendorp when they were together at Maritzburg. Based on his stats under the German’s mentorship, he could be one of the answers to his side’s attacking problems as they seek to bolster their attack.

The Siya crew got in contact with SuperSport’s CEO, Stan Matthews, who confirmed interest in the player. He, however, would not divulge which clubs have shown an interest.

Matthews said, “Yeah, we have had a couple of calls about Evans, but I don’t think it would be right for me to name names right now. Look, he has his targets at SuperSport and we’re still in (the) midst of the season. We’ll talk to him about his career path once all of the games are played.”

With Sundowns also interested, as previously reported by the Siya crew, Chiefs may have a battle on their hands if they’re to land the Zimbabwe international, and a good Africa Cup of Nations this year could make things even more difficult for any potential suitors.

A solid display in the continental showpiece will see his price tag rise, as would the interest from both Chiefs and Sundowns.
