… Pirates lead SSU & City in Ekstein chase

-

Orlando Pirates are one of the clubs that have been linked with Hendrick Ekstein in recent months, after entering into the final six months of his contract with Kaizer Chiefs in January, and it seems as though Chiefs’ cross-city rivals could land their target.

Ekstein is able to join any club of his choice on a free, after June 30, and while both SuperSport United and Cape Town City have been linked to the player, indications are that Bucs are leading the race.

According to the Siya sources, Bucs have re-visited their interest in the talented player and could tie him down on an attractive deal. Having signed goalkeeper Brilliant Khuzwayo last year, after his contract with Chiefs came to an end, Ekstein could very well be the second Amakhosi star to cross the floor in a matter of one year.

“There’s been ongoing interest from Pirates in the player and now that he has become available for a move, officially, the club’s (Pirates’) interest has resurfaced. SuperSport United and Cape Town City are some of the other clubs believed to be keen on the player,” explained a Siya source.

Ekstein played 27 matches in all competitions for Chiefs during the 2018/19 season and scored five goals in the process.

He looked an improved player, and hungrier for success, under the mentorship of coach Ernst Middendorp, since the German tactician’s arrival at the club in December. The midfielder was influential with his performances in helping Chiefs reach the final of the Nedbank Cup, which will be played at Durban’s Moses Mabhida Stadium on May 18.
