AmaZulu & Highlands track Mokwena closely

-

Interested suitors in South Africa’s topflight are believed to be lining up for Rhulani Mokwena’s signature, this according to Siya sources, following the news that he is yet to return to Orlando Pirates following his ‘study leave’.

The former Mamelodi Sundowns number two was appointed as Pirates’ interim head coach following Milutin Sredojevic’s departure in August last year, though he resumed his role as assistant coach after Jozef

Zinnbauer’s appointment at the helm in December.

But shortly after the German’s appointment, Mokwena took some time to further his football knowledge in the United Kingdom. And while it has been reported that Mokwena is not seeing eye-to-eye with the German mentor, it was initially thought that the highly-rated tactician would see out his contract, which is expected to expire on June 30.

However, the latest news reaching the Siya crew is that Mokwena could be exiting the Bucs camp before then. And that no less than two clubs are closely monitoring his situation.

Both Highlands Park and AmaZulu FC are believed to have identified Mokwena as a possible addition to their respective technical teams, should they decide to make changes at some point in time.

It was revealed last week that the Lions of the North have earmarked Mokwena as a possible addition, although the club’s co-chairman, Brad Kaftel, denied any links with the Pirates assistant coach.

In part, Kaftel said at the time, “That’s definitely not true, it’s false – 100% false. We’ve got a contract with Owen da Gama that runs until the end of next season, in 2021.”

It has since been revealed that AmaZulu have reignited their interest. Mokwena was linked to the club before Jozef Vukusic’s arrival, and is now again being linked. Indications are that Usuthu could look to Mokwena, should they opt for a change on their bench.

The Durban side are currently sat in 16th place on the Absa Premiership table, with 17 points after 20 rounds of league action.
