Downs preparing new Mweene contract?

-

Mamelodi Sundowns could reward goalkeeper Kennedy Mweene with a new contract, the Siya crew has been told.

The veteran goal minder has been in outstanding form recently while deputizing for Denis Onyango in the crucial back-to-back CAF Champions League group stage matches against reigning champions Al Ahly.

Mweene, 37, was a last-minute change the day Downs faced Ahly at the Cairo International Stadium back in February when Onyango got injured in training, but his performance kept the

Brazilians in the game thanks to his clean sheet in a fixture where Thapelo Morena came off the bench to score the only goal of the match.

A week later, Mweene retained his position as the No.1 and yet again did not concede as the Brazilians won by the same margin, this time with Peter Shalulile the goalscorer at FNB Stadium.

Soccer Laduma reported in June 2020 that the Zambian had put pen to paper on a three-year deal, which was broken down into options.

It’s understood the last of the options could be triggered next month, but Sundowns are rather contemplating on giving Mweene a new deal all together.

The contract, depending on how it is structured this time, could take Mweene right through to retirement as he will turn 38 later this year.

Downs do have a plan for the future, in Ricardo Goss and Reyaad Pieterse, while SuperSport United and Bafana Bafana skipper Ronwen Williams is also on their radar – but Mweene’s recent appearances in the first team have proven that he can still do the job when called on, even unexpectedly so!
