“Well, things have not gone according to plan in the first three games (prior to Chiefs’ midweek fixture against Marumo Gallants) of the Zwane/Sheppard interim era – coaching Chiefs is no easy thing. It’s a very big job and one that needs an experienced man at the helm. Both coaches are still in their infancy stage of coaching, you need to go and earn your stripes in this game. Can they currently do the job to the fans’ satisfaction? So far, it’s a big no, but let’s see how they finish the season. There has also been some changes and additions both in the scouting and management departments. Kaizer Jnr sits as sporting director, Bobby in his role as football manager and Molefi Ntseki as head of technical. There should be no reason why the three cannot gel and work well together. Bobby has vast experience in getting deals done and is respected in the industry. Ntseki, from a technical level, is a qualified member of the team and Jnr is learning the trade earning his stripes, but has played at a professional level and should know a good player when he sees one. It should, on paper, work well. However, let’s sit back and see!

The problem at Chiefs has been threefold: Firstly, not recruiting well enough, even if it they are in the free market or smaller transfer fee area. Secondly, their recruitment needs to improve and, lastly, players coming through from the youth have also not been at the level required at Chiefs. Allowing senior players to pass their sell-by date and keeping them on when not at the same level they once were results in too many sentimental decisions being taken, resulting in an ageing squad. The recruitment of coaches as well… Ernst Middendorp finished second and should have won the title but failed on the last day. Hunt came in with a great CV, but was it the right fit for Chiefs at the time? Baxter had a good record with Chiefs previously, but bringing him back was probably the wrong move in the position they were in. Ultimately, both the infighting at the club and inconsistent results cost Baxter his job. They need the right man, with a good CV, strong man-manager, innovative and hard worker. It’s no walk in the park this Chiefs job. The problem going forward, if they do bring in a new man at the helm and the current assistants stay, could we see the “backstabbing”? This could be their downfall yet again, as we know that’s where both Hunt and Baxter had a problem.”
