Petersen on Euro radar, will Chiefs table new offer?

-

Word reaching the Siya crew is that the upcoming 2022/23 season could be a defining one for Kaizer Chiefs goalkeeper Brandon Petersen.

He was the second-most used player at the club during the previous campaign, as the first-choice shot-stopper behind Daniel Akpeyi, but ahead of Itumeleng Khune and Bruce Bvuma. Akpeyi has since left Naturena. Petersen joined Chiefs from Bidvest Wits officially in June last year around the same time Stuart Baxter returned to the club, but he had been training with the Glamour Boys long before that, even though he could not be registered due to the Soweto giants being banned by FIFA from making any transfers.

Soccer Laduma has been informed that the 27-year-old has in the past had his name circulated in Europe for any clubs looking for a quality goalkeeper, but with the COVID-19 pandemic disrupting the market, those conversations didn’t pick up momentum.

Chiefs then announced he had put pen to paper on a deal that will expire in June 2024 in a clear indication that the club had finally found a goalie that could take over from Khune given his age and quality.

The crew understands that Petersen would have been watched by top scouts abroad had he travelled with Bafana Bafana overseas in March for the two friendly matches against Guinea in Belgium and FIFA World Cup champions France in Lille.

But he was ruled out by injury.

The coming season could be a big one and open that door again for Petersen, leaving Chiefs to consider whether to offer him new terms or invite bids for his services.
