Zungu contract length revealed
Mamelodi Sundowns have made another big statement, after unveiling Bongani Zungu in front of a packed Loftus Versfeld Stadium on Saturday just minutes before their 4-0 demolition of rivals Kaizer Chiefs.
Soccer Laduma reported Downs’ pursuit of the midfielder prior to the start of the current season, with Zungu becoming a free agent when it was officially confirmed that he was leaving French side Amiens SC.
The Bafana Bafana international spent six years abroad – first in Portugal at
Vitoria Guimaraes, followed by Amiens, and then a loan spell in Scotland, before returning to France to conclude his time in Europe.
Speaking to journalists after the Chiefs match, Sundowns co-coach Rhulani Mokwena admitted that Zungu had “other lucrative offers”, but in the end turned down suitors and penned a deal with his former club instead.
According to information provided to the Siya crew, Zungu has agreed a three-year contract at Chloorkop, with an option to have it renewed for a further season.
How much Downs tabled hasn’t been made public, but given that the player – according to a list put out by French media of all the wages in the Ligue 1 – was earning around R360 000 in his second season at Amiens, you can expect the Brazilians to have come closer to those sorts of figures to beat stiff competition.
Amakhosi were also in the running for Zungu’s signature, but Siya sources have indicated that the Glamour Boys were not willing to take part in a bidding war.
