Changing landscape for SA’s big-name players
A wind of change! Household names in the PSL are finding themselves pushed to the wayside, with an increasing number of players affected by the changing landscape in South African professional football. Several big-name players and veterans are currently without contracts, while others have made shock decisions following their respective surprise exits. Some players have moved to the Motsepe Foundation Championship, while others have decided to retire from the game.
In all of this, age seems to be the common denominator around most of the players’ individual situations as PSL clubs are taking a different approach compared to the last decade where big-money deals had been the focal point for the experienced and high-profile players. However, while the change is seen as detrimental to some stakeholders in the fraternity, it may be beneficial to SA football as clubs aim to be become commercially viable.
