SPONSORSHIP RIGMAROLE
The Siya Special in last week’s edition was an eye-opener regarding the PSL sponsorship rules. I commend Soccer Laduma for giving us such an educational piece. Indeed, the NSL rules need to be looked at for the member clubs to be viable, which can only be done by securing sponsors. The expert who was giving us those insights, on condition of anonymity, gave brilliant suggestions. On a lighter note, let’s welcome Casemiro to Old Trafford, but it still puzzles me why he opted for Europa League football instead of the UEFA Champions League. Surely, it is influenced by money. The underhand tactics used by Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates in securing financial sponsorship for themselves to the exclusion of other clubs are now glaringly obvious. This has been going on for decades and is now undeniable. This is the second time the League is challenging a sponsorship deal secured by Cape Town City. The League also prevented Swallows FC from getting sponsored, citing a conflict with its partners, while Chiefs and Pirates are sponsored by a company in the same industry as Swallows’ rejected sponsor. Yet the League and clubs are in desperate need of financial assistance. The PSL exco must be careful. Their behaviour is one of the detrimental actions that hurt football unintentionally.
