Baxter brought Billiat back to life
As highlighted extensively in Soccer Laduma issue 1265 back in March, Baxter came into Kaizer Chiefs and inherited a very out-of-form version of Billiat. The Zimbabwean attacker had been largely ineffective under
Ernst Middendorp, scoring a paltry three times in 25 league and cup
matches under the German in the 2019/20 season. Gavin Hunt arrived and was tipped to breathe a new lease of life into Gaucho, as the player is affectionately known in football circles, but the decorated coach couldn’t get a consistent tune out of Billiat. Just two goals from 22 appearances was forthcoming and many supporters were, or had, reached the end of their patience.
Baxter hardly walked through the door and waved a magic wand. The nimble-footed star got two goals in the coach’s first 11 matches at the helm. That is no surprise because the player he inherited was on a disastrous scoring streak, as per the numbers below…
