STEENBOK AND BAFANA LEGENDS IN TALENT IDENTIFICATION INITIATIVE
Newly-appointed South African Football Association technical director, Walter Steenbok, has hit the ground running in ensuring that football talent in the country is identified and nurtured from an early age in order to improve the national teams in the long run.
Steenbok was in Tzaneen, in Limpopo, this past weekend, where he led a talent identification initiative alongside Mzansi football legends such as Doctor ‘16V’ Khumalo and Aaron ‘Mbazo’ Mokoena.
As part of the failed Vision 2022 initiative that was launched by
SAFA in 2014, which was aimed at rebuilding the structures of the organisation at all levels and to pave the way for the success of the national teams, among other issues, there were promises about taking football development to a whole new level.
Following his appointment as Bafana Bafana head coach in May last year, Hugo Broos promised to assist in rebuilding the South African senior national team by introducing young players to the team and Steenbok appears to be following a similar route.
One of the most recent disappointments for the country’s football was earlier this month when Bafana failed to qualify for next year’s African Nations Championship (CHAN) and Steenbok wants to ensure that such failures do not persist under his watch.
The former Kaizer Chiefs scout led coaching clinics during a local football tournament held at the Nkowankowa Stadium last weekend along with the Bafana legends, as well as Baroka FC head coach Vincent Kobola.
