Doc’s memory lane: We were rolling on the floor

-

There was a friendly game we were going to play in Botswana and coach Augusto Palacios didn’t want us to fly, so he insisted that we drive, before playing Nigeria. We got to Botswana and the coach organized for all the players to be on the same floor and gave security strict instructions about visitors and the times the players were expected back in their rooms. Security knew what time we were going to breakfast, lunch and dinner. The only presidential suite in that floor was for Dr Kaizer Motaung, but because he was not there, Bobby Motaung used the room. On Friday night, around 22h00, we could hear some commotion on the corridor. So, we went to watch what was going on and then we saw three ladies demanding access into the players’ rooms, but we were not sure who those players were. While the ladies were going on and on with the security, coach Augusto was coming behind them. Apparently the ladies said they were there to see their cousin. Upon the security’s question of the identity of the cousin, the ladies mentioned Steve Crowley. That was coach Augusto’s cue, as he shouted, “No, no, no! Impossible! A cousin is white with black cousins, no, no, no, you lie! Take them away here!” So, we were all standing there in disbelief. When the ladies saw us, they started screaming and the coach shouted even louder for the security to remove them. We were all rolling on the floor, laughing at the way the coach was so serious and you know his heavy accent and English – it was so funny.
