Chiefs yet to open Mathoho contract talks

-

The future of Kaizer Chiefs veteran defender Erick Mathoho remains unclear at this stage, with Siya sources revealing that the two parties are yet to open talks regarding his current contract status.

Mathoho is in the final few months of his agreement with Amakhosi and will be in a position to sign a pre-contract elsewhere as of January, which is six months before the deal he put pen to paper on the last time expires at the end of the 2022/23 season.

Indications are that the lack of game-time will be factor for ‘Tower’, who joined the Glamour Boys from the now-defunct Bloemfontein Celtic in 2012 at the time when coach Stuart Baxter arrived at the club and achieved great success with the squad assembled.

With Chiefs sporting director Kaizer Motaung Jnr emphasising the push to reduce the average age at the beginning of coach Arthur Zwane’s tenure, Mathoho survived the chop while a number of his teammates were let go.

But the centre-back with over 30 Bafana Bafana appearances has hardly kicked a ball so far, only making a one-minute cameo in the win over SuperSport

United back in September – although he has been on the bench a few times.

According to Siya sources in the know, the Chiefs hierarchy has yet to open official talks regarding what will happen to ‘Tower’ in the coming months, with no indication whether he is on his way out or staying beyond June 30.

The way things are looking right now, his future may lie elsewhere considering Soccer Laduma has previously reported that he was offered to Swallows FC before the start of the current campaign.
