Pirates come in as favourites
If we look at the form of the two teams, you have to think that the ‘home side’ are the favourites to take three points from this derby. The suspension of Timm may even the playing field somewhat though and Riveiro has to get his midfield configuration right and for Timm’s replacement to perform to a similar level. Chiefs
are three matches without a win in all competitions but sit just one point behind Pirates on the log standings having won three successive league matches before the recent defeat to Chippa. Amakhosi have deserved more from some matches based on their performances – for example, in the 1-1 cup draw against AmaZulu. However, they also got some assistance in facing 10 men that day, whilst they beat Stellenbosch FC 3-1 thanks to a red card and three penalties being awarded (albeit former FIFA referee Ace Ncobo called all three “spot on” decisions in his assessment of the incidents). There are so many talking points to look forward to in this match, not least whether the Glamour Boys can breach a Buccaneers backline that has conceded just six goals in 12 league fixtures and who stopped Sundowns from scoring in the two MTN8 cup semi-final fixtures. With five clean sheets in their last seven matches in all competitions, the likes of the slightly out-of-form Du Preez and the rusty-looking Billiat will need to be close to their best. The pressure is arguably more
on Zwane for this one as a loss would see scrutiny crank up after their cup exit and the extension of their trophy drought looking set to reach an astonishing eight years. Pirates supporters won’t want to lose this one but could be okay with a draw, with a cup final on the horizon, to take some of the focus away from the players. It should prove a highly entertaining affair!
