Doc’s memory bank: He always trained with his shirt off

Due to his football background, coach Sergio’s training sessions were all about fun, professionalism and understanding, most of the time. Yes, he would stamp his authority, in his own humble way. If it wasn’t for the Bafana interruptions, coach Sergio’s team would have swept the floor with most of the teams in the league and won everything. What I also liked is that he would get involved whenever we played 11 v 11 or small-sided games at training. No fat at all in that man’s body, very tiny and short, but so elusive on the field. Always trained with his shirt off and enjoyed passing games. “L et me show you how it is done” and he’d demonstrate it for you with aplomb, at his age. It was always great to play with or against him in training and the way he would coach while playing was unbelievable! What a coach!
