Chiefs hierarchy tracking progress under Zwane

-

A win in the Soweto Derby against bitter rivals Orlando Pirates at the weekend would have gone a long way in giving Arthur Zwane some cushion as Kaizer Chiefs coach with the club’s hierarchy watching from the suites.

In the lead-up to the big match at Soccer City, there were murmurs that Zwane was looking over his shoulder as results were mixed, which included the painful outcome of failing to edge closer to ending the long-standing trophy drought.

With Amakhosi being knocked out by AmaZulu FC in the semi-finals of the MTN8 via the away goal rule in the two-legged tie, the Siya crew understands that it wasn’t all rosy in the Chiefs camp in Durban.

It came as no surprise, however, that Zwane’s bosses would have found the result hard to swallow as the Glamour Boys continue to search for what has now become an elusive trophy going as far back as May 2015.

Chiefs clinched the league and cup double under then coach Stuart Baxter, but have not been able to collect any major silverware since – so Zwane was under pressure to put a stop to the barren years, but failed in this year’s MTN8.

Soccer Laduma now understands that the man nicknamed ‘10111’ will be given support from above, but expectations remain high and the Chiefs hierarchy want to see improvement in the coming months when the local league resumes after the FIFA World Cup.

Zwane has said he is not worried about getting sacked.

“I think as a club, we have a plan. I did not come into the game worried about my job,” he told journalists, in part, following the Soweto Derby win.

If results turn, Zwane, like any coach, will be held accountable.
