Insider: Chiefs offer for Fleurs disappointing

-

According to a high-level insider at SuperSport United, the offer Kaizer Chiefs have proposed to date for Luke Fleurs has been described as “disappointing”.

Soccer Laduma have been on top of this story, with the Glamour Boys’ interest in the young centre-back going as far back as last season, even though nothing materialised at the time and the player stayed put in Tshwane.

Chiefs’ initial offer, as previously reported, was a discussion around a potential swap deal for veteran midfielder Alexander Cole to move in the opposite direction – and it has now emerged that Matsatsantsa have rejected that proposal.

“It’s no secret that they (Chiefs) paid R10 million for Ashely Du Preez to get him from Stellenbosch FC, so the club finds it disappointing that they’ve offered an ex-player in exchange for a junior international,” said the source.

“Luke is the reigning Young Player of the Season and was part of the U23 team at the Olympics in Tokyo. His stock went up, and there’s a general feeling Chiefs should have done better with their initial offer – that’s if they were serious.”

The deal now appears dead in the water following confirmation that Fleurs has put pen to paper on a long-term contract at SuperSport, which also includes a local and international buy-out clause. It means Chiefs would then have to up the ante if they are to beat their local rivals to the defender’s signature, but word coming out of Tshwane is that the Glamour Boys aren’t willing to spend the kind of money their rivals expect.
