Molefe’s Chiefs future linked to Khune…

-

The short-term future of young Kaizer Chiefs goalkeeper Bontle Molefe will depend on which direction the club takes with his more senior teammate, Itumeleng Khune, the Siya crew has been informed.

Soccer Laduma reported last week that Molefe had been offered a new contract at Naturena, and word from sources at the club is that the junior international has put pen to paper on a deal understood to be around four years.

But what hasn’t yet been discussed is whether the 20-year-old, who is yet to make an official appearance for the first team, will still be at the club next season as an understudy to the keepers ahead of him in the pecking order. One of those is veteran Khune,

who is in the final months of his contract, with Chiefs yet to make any announcements on his future.

Siya sources have suggested that Molefe could be loaned out to another DStv Premiership outfit, should Amakhosi opt to retain Khune’s services beyond June 30, because it is important that the young talent starts getting game-time.

There is still Brandon Petersen and Bruce Bvuma ahead of Molefe in the Glamour Boys’ goalkeeping department, led by former keeper Aubrey Mathibe as the mentor.

With Molefe now having signed a new deal, this shows he is part of the club’s long-term future… but his camp doesn’t want him sitting on the bench.

It will become clearer what steps they can take alongside the Chiefs hierarchy once a decision has been made on Khune, the 35-year-old keeper who has been with the Soweto giants since he was only 13.
