“Call me old school, but in the strangest places I have found my radar twitches when there’s a museum nearby,” says Nancy Richards, who is working on a book of tales that “South Africa grew up with”. And the museums are not urban, state-ofthe-art but humble, owner-built, and lovingly curated because someone cares. “I’m on a crusade to keep them alive,” she says. Her other passion is to keep the planet alive and well. “Because of tourism, not despite it. And at a Grootbos Private Nature Reserve in the Overberg, I really got the feeling that Nature was in good hands.” Join Nancy’s small-museum meander in Memoirs of a Museum Junkie (page 50), and read Fair and Away (page 64) on the Fair Tradeaccredited Grootbos reserve.
