The little Northern Cape Karoo town of Fraserburg punches well above its weight, something borne out by a social-media poll on South Africa’s favourite Karoo towns, which tells us that Karoo roadtrippers seem to favour this out-of-the-way spot – it came fifth after favourites like Prince Albert and Graaff-Reinet. That’s why regular contributor Chris Marais set off to visit it. He found a town with surprising variety, a great local guide, and some 250-million-yearold creature footsteps. He also found a Gift of the Givers convoy bringing relief to many of the drought-stricken and very grateful local farmers. Read Tales of the Golden Bakkie on page 56.
