Pho­to­jour­nal­ist and au­thor Mar­ion White­head has been gar­den­ing since her mom thrust a kid­die­sized spade into her chubby hand, to­gether with some radish seeds to cul­ti­vate in the spot she was al­lo­cated in their farm’s gar­den in ru­ral East­ern Cape. “Over the years, my pas­sion for plants in gen­eral, and veg­gies in par­tic­u­lar, has grown (sorry, but pun in­tended), as has my in­ter­est in nat­u­ral, or­ganic and per­ma­cul­ture meth­ods.” A visit to Numbi Val­ley Per­ma­cul­ture Farm out­side De Rust made Mar­ion re­alise how well the world­wide seed savers net­work has taken root in this coun­try, which you can read about in Full Seed Ahead on page 62.
