5 KwaZulu-Natal Greenfire Lodge Northern Drakensberg

South African Country Life - - Country Escapes - – Stephen Smith

To some romance is luxury and champagne, to others it’s expensive gifts and carefully selected words. For us it’s a place where we are encouraged to spend time together, be it on a walk in the mountains, at the side of a dam, or delighting in a comforting, delicious meal (that neither of us had to cook). Greenfire Lodge is remote and spectacular, set at the base of mighty cliffs. It’s built in the style of Canadian log cabins, which works well in this setting. A central, communal lodge holds a lounge, bar and dining room, a fireplace in the middle of the circular room and huge windows that bring the views of the berg to your feet. The rooms are smaller log cabins, with a veranda and wonderful views. Each room is en suite, has a fireplace for romantic evenings, and hot water gets delivered to you for your morning coffee. There are also hikes, including one to the top of an escarpment, from where you can look down onto a colony of Cape vultures that numbers in the hundreds. If you’d prefer other legs to do the walking, a stable of horses is available for guided outrides. All at incredibly good value.
