Barney Stathakis shares his vinyl record collection
Like most vinyl collectors, music is Barney Stathakis’ passion, and has been for more than 50 years. One of the f irst vinyl dealers in South A frica, his taste in music spans many decades – from the ’60s to the present day. “My brother Costa played in a rock and roll band and when he gave me a few Elvis Presley records, the collecting bug well and truly bit,” explains Barney.
Vinyl records have amazing sound quality and Barney found that this was the best way to listen to the music he loves. “I started buying a few seven-inch singles a week and my collection grew steadily. In the early ’80s, a friend in the UK began sending me singles and music magazines and I began buying from the magazines as well.” He also added to his collection by advertising in Pretoria and Jo’burg.
Having amassed a collection of about 15 000, Barney eventually had to cut it down when he ran out of space, but still has around 5 000. Among his favourites are The Beatles, The Rolling Stones and Bruce Springsteen. He also likes modern indie bands like The Wombats and local group, Shortstraw. Barney has travelled extensively, picking up records while in the UK and USA. These include ‘Jail House Rock’ by Elvis Presley, ‘Made of Stone’ by Stone Roses and ‘Prism’ by Katy Perry.
The sound and the joy of holding a record sleeve are what make collecting vinyl records exciting for this Pretoria collector
